Potential Flow Wave excitation

1 Test description

In this test, the default semisubmersible is exposed to different wave conditions and wave loads are computed using the Potential flow theory

2 Model

This test uses the Support structure - semisub template.
The model is shown in the figure below:

3 Analytical solution

The wave excitation loads are computed according to the theory described in the Potential flow theory document. The simulation is run with Loads only, which means that the floater does not move and the loads can be computed at the initial position of the point of application of the loads.
Five load cases are run:
  • 10s 3m 0deg: regular wave of amplitude 3 m and period 10 s
  • 5s 2m 0deg: regular wave of amplitude 2 m and period 5 s
  • 10s 3m 50deg: regular wave as 1st load case, coming at at angle of 50 degrees wrt forward direction
  • 10s -7s 5m -3m 50deg - -30deg: two regular waves with respectively 10 and 7 s period, 5 and 3 m amplitude, 50 and -30 degr heading
  • full_spectrum:a spectrum with 50 components, with different periods, amplitudes headings and phases

4 Results

A simulation of 60 seconds is run, and the test is considered passed if the results from Ashes are within 0.1% of the analytical solution.
